The Tohono O’Odham, like the Aztecs of central Mexico, were cultivating and weaving cotton before Columbus. They’ve lived in the Sonoran desert for hundreds of years and have always grown cotton, corn, gathered cactus fruits, and made baskets from desert plants. I love some of the baskets I’ve bought from them when heading west from Tucson through Sells and Kitt Peak.
