With the sophistication of current instruments, who would think the antique telescope at Lowell Observatory would be the start of current theory about the origin and end of the universe. In 1912, astronomer Vesto Melvin Slipher observed a dozen galaxies moving away from earth at a million miles per hour. He reported this at the 1914 meeting of the American Astronomical Society. That made Edwin Hubble look through the big telescope on Mount Wilson, California. There he saw galaxies farther out that are moving away one hundred times faster. In 1929, Hubble confirmed Einstein's theory of relativity. So far it seems this is how things are, because later observations by other astronomers provide more evidence of the big bang still flying out. But in 1993 X-rays by the satellite ROSAT found a huge cloud of gas - more mass than 500 billion suns – This suggests the universe is finite and will stop expanding. We do not know yet if it just stops, or falls back into itself.
