Columbus and company had no idea they’d brought certain death and extinction to the Taino Indians of San Salvador. Something else I picked up from this Columbus and the age of discovery book was the fact that kids in Europe that got sick either died or survived and so the adults there were survivors. The dead kids just weren’t around. But America was like nothing but kids, because nobody had had to survive the diseases the Europeans brought that hadn’t been in America yet. So most of the people got sick at the same time as if there was a plague, and there just weren’t many people around to keep things going – like taking care of the sick. So things basically collapsed.
